Case Study: Cash+Community Works
The Cash+Community Works program is designed to engage participants across a three-year period.
There are two main aspects of the program:
-
Financial resources in the form of $200 monthly stipends, one-time grants of up to $5000, and an $800 final transitional stipend, and
-
6– to 12-person cohorts the participants meet with on a monthly basis
The Cash+Community Works model theorizes that encouraging relationship building among these cohorts will generate peer-driven change.
Key Performance Indicators
The Cash+Community Works pilot program successfully demonstrated a novel approach to disrupting generational poverty, serving nearly 300 families across New York City with remarkable engagement rates and measurable improvements across all targeted outcomes.

The People Behind the Program
Watch the story of a group of mothers who joined the same cohort within this groundbreaking pilot initiative. Within two years, they successfully opened a daycare franchise, designed by and for local families. These moms have written a new chapter with their passion and sense of social responsibility. In their own words: "We aspire to build the best child care. We want to help the community the way Cash+Community Works helped us."
What's Next?
The INFUSE (INcome and FUnctional Social Engagement) research project builds on the promising results of the Cash+Community Works Pilot, which showed improvements in financial well-being, overall wellness, and the development of peer support networks.
This study aims to explore whether the combination of unrestricted cash infusions and structured peer engagement groups produces stronger outcomes than either intervention alone. The 2x2 factorial study will use a randomized design with four groups: one receiving both interventions, two receiving either cash or peer support individually, and one control group receiving neither.
To ensure data integrity and comparability across groups, all participants will complete monthly surveys or journals, with incentives provided for participation. The study targets English-speaking adults aged 18–60 in Queens who meet income criteria and did not participate in the prior pilot. A total of 1,040 participants will be included, with both quantitative and qualitative data collected through interviews, surveys, focus groups, and liaison notes.
